One of the squirrels I found wandering around the gardensI took a trip to the
Huntington Gardens with Liza a while back (before this moving/no internet disaster happened, more on that soon). Normally the admission for this beautiful park is $20 or so, but Liza and I had the hookup, so we got in free despite the fact that this afternoon would’ve easily been worth the cost of admission. I’ll post more of my favorite photos from the trip later, but I wanted to first show some really cool ones I got of the locally famous
Pasadena Parrots. From Wikipedia:
Theories and myths abound on how these parrots came to claim Pasadena and surrounding towns as their home. A heavily accepted story by longtime residents of the area is that they were part of the stock at Simpson’s Nursery on East Colorado Blvd. in the Lamanda Park area. The nursery was burned down in 1959, and the parrots were thereby released to forage in the lush Pasadena area. It is also possible that some parrots moved northward from their normal range in central and northern Mexico as human habitation in the Pasadena area created artificial habitat in which the parrots could survive. Among their favorite foods are the berry kernels of the cedar trees that grow in great abundance around Pasadena.
We were strolling through the gardens when we heard some loud birds up in one of the larger trees, here’s the highlights from my brief sighting. Click to bigify. The last picture are some friends of the parrots, hanging out together.

Stumbled upon a blog today called Fat Man…Skinny Wallet. The post that brought me there made me think of two things I have been meaning to do in Los Angeles.
Many moons ago, I used to live in Los Feliz, which is one of the “hip” little neighborhoods in Los Angeles that all the yuppies who are not scions of producers or actors flock to. It’s heavily featured in the movie Slackers. It’s also the home of one of my favorite LA landmarks, the Griffith Park Observatory.
I picked Los Feliz because it was a great walkable neighborhood with all the shops and theaters I could desire, and it had a subway station within walking distance.
- Go to the Griffith Park Observatory.
- Take public transportation more often.
I’m okay with #2 for now since I currently carpool with two other people to work and I’ve been trying to take the bus more when I go out at night. #1 on the other hand really needs to be dealt with. Hopefully over the holiday break I can find some time to get down to the observatory for sunset. The picture above should be enough motivation for me to go check it out. If not, this next one should.

Thats right, you need a permit to dance in this fine city. My girlfriend discovered this Friday night at The Griffin in Los Feliz. She started the night off with a Long Island Iced Tea and after a tequila shot and some persuasion from a not so innocent friend ended up innocently dancing on top of one of the one-foot high ledges next to a glass enclosed fireplace. After a couple minutes a bouncer approached the dancing fools and set them straight. They weren’t causing any trouble and as bad as it sounds dancing next to a fireplace, it didn’t seem all that unsafe. He said The Griffin wasn’t allowed to have dancing, fireplace or not, since they didn’t have the proper permits, we thought he was making things up, but it turns out he was right (he also bought the previously mentioned dancing fools drinks, he was a really nice guy from what I could tell).
