The NBA Finals

I just watched this video with Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett regarding their recent championship and it really brought these finals into perspective.  While watching the NBA Finals I really wanted the Lakers to win.  They’re the hometown LA team (sorry Clippers) and I had casually followed them throughout the season.  Even though I had been a KG fan in Minnesota, I still decided I was rooting for the Lakers this year, especially since the Celtics were the favorites all year. Twitter Ultimate mashup

I had this idea a while ago and thought it was an alright idea, but never took the time to make it happen. Then in a chance conversation with Drew, he mentioned something along the same lines as what I came up with. Now that two people thought it might be a good idea, I decided to go for it.

The idea was to put some kind of framework together to use Twitter to collect score updates from Ultimate tournaments. I spent a couple hours today reading up on the Twitter API and hacking some PHP code together to make things work. I think it’s something that could work pretty well, the only problem with the idea is if people are too lazy to sign up for Twitter (and of course if they’re willing to take the time to submit updates).

The result of my Saturdays work is this: you can now send a twitter message containing “@bananacut” and within 2 minutes it will be snagged from out of the interwebsphere and posted here. Now I just need to find enough Ultimate playing Twitter users that are willing to submit updates.

Ultimate tournaments and Twitter

I was thinking about some ideas related to the publicity of ultimate tournaments and I think Twitter could be a great tool to advertise for tournament reporting. If everyone included “UPA” in their Twitter messages, you could have realtime ultimate updates simply by tracking the phrase “UPA” on Twitter. This would require very little work by the UPA and could easily be adapted into a quick efficient score-reporting tool with a days work by a script ninja and the UPA score reporting system. Just a thought bouncing around in my head along with my crazy ideas for my new domain: www.collegeultimate.net (more on this in the future!).
